Did you know: The Groundhog Day tradition comes from ancient European lore, where people watched badgers and hedgehogs to predict the end of winter. When settlers came to America, Pennsylvania didn’t have many hedgehogs… but it did have groundhogs. And so a new star was born!
In 1887, Punxsutawney Phil made his first “official” prediction, and the rest is history.
Legend says:
🌤️ If he sees his shadow → 6 more weeks of winter
☁️ If he doesn’t → early spring!

2026 is shaping up to be a big year in Liberty, and we’d love for you to be part of it!
From Waffle Fest to special celebrations throughout the year, our events wouldn’t happen without the help of amazing volunteers. Whether you enjoy being behind the scenes with setup and cleanup, helping with games, working a booth, or supporting event activities, there’s a spot for you.
If you’re interested in lending a hand (even for just one event!), email events@libertysc.com or sign up using the form here: http://bit.ly/volunteerliberty

The forecast for Friday night into Saturday morning continues to worsen, with some models now showing measurable snow in our area. If this happens, road conditions may be unsafe for large trucks, and Friday routes may not be able to be collected on Saturday as previously planned.
To help stay ahead of the weather and maximize service, Meridian Waste will begin collecting the Wednesday route this afternoon once the City of Liberty’s Tuesday route is completed. Crews will finish the Wednesday route tomorrow and begin the Thursday route.
On Friday, crews will work to complete the remaining Thursday route along with the Friday route.
We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as crews work to maintain service during this unusual winter weather.

Emergency Warming Shelters Update for the City of Liberty!
Due to hazardous road conditions, warming shelters at the Rosewood Center & Liberty City Gym will be closed today, Sunday, January 25.
Please continue to monitor City of Liberty updates and stay safe.

We encourage residents to take time now to prepare by charging devices, stocking up on food and water, filling any necessary prescriptions, and making plans to stay warm. Please remember to bring pets indoors with food and water and have flashlights and extra batteries ready.
City of Liberty will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as needed. Stay safe!

Residents of Old Norris Rd. and the surrounding area, please be aware that there is currently a water outage due to a water line break. Our team is on-site and working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while we get everything back to normal.
What a great week our City Council had in Columbia representing the City of Liberty at Hometown Legislative Action Day and Municipal Elected Officials Training. Our team had the chance to hear from some outstanding speakers who shared real-world insight and practical advice from their experiences in government.
We were especially grateful to our State Representative, Davey Hiott, for taking time out of a very busy day to spend with us. He welcomed our City Council to the State House, showed them his seat in the House Chamber, and invited them into them into his office to talk about the work being done on behalf of our district. He also helped arrange visits with Speaker of the House Murrell Smith and Governor Henry McMaster, which made the experience even more meaningful.
We truly appreciate Representative Hiott’s time, hospitality, and continued support of the City of Liberty.
Opportunities like this help strengthen the connection between our local community and state leadership, and we are thankful for a productive and informative trip.

Burns Hill will be closed on Friday, January 23rd, after lunch until the winter storm has passed and emergency management deems it safe for travel. Please plan accordingly and stay safe during the storm.
Thank you for your understanding!
